ABOUT THE CO-OP

The original Cooperative was formed in Mullen 1927.  In 1953, the current building went under construction.  Originally it housed a lumber yard on the south end, a Creamery retail for the lumber yard, and an apartment.  The front room of the apartment is so large the community used to hold square dances there!  The center part of the building housed the automotive center. A gas station was located on the northeast corner.  It burned in 1972 and was not rebuilt. The north side housed a feed distributorship.  Four years later the west wing was added, originally used for furniture distribution.

The Cooperative dissolved in 2002 and the building was purchased by the Porath family, owners of a local ranch and construction company.  The majority of the building housed their business equipment and the apartment housed numerous family membes of the years.  I purchased the building in 2021, during the height of Covid.  (I also owned a home in town which I ran as a short term rental.  I was bored and needed a project!).  Since that date I have replaced windows, doors, light fixture plumbing and repainted.  I have a true love/hate relationship with this building.

The building now houses a "shop" ran by the Brown family who are small engine mechanics, a ware for the Mercantile, a local used merchandize business, as well as the north side is used for agricultural feed distribution.  In addition the center part is now an art studio with a connected apartment.
